How to Set Up Text to Donate Campaigns

Last Updated: May 01, 2018 11:22AM PDT

Text to donate keywords make giving with a debit or credit card as easy as possible.

Individuals who text your keyword immediately receive a text message reply with a secure link to a PCI-compliant mobile donation page. With just a few clicks, individuals can make a one-time or recurring gift to your organization. Individuals that do not complete their donation form automatically receive three TCPA-compliant reminder texts to encourage and optimize fulfillment.

We encourage you to set up multiple targeted keywords and segmented giving forms within the same fundraising campaign for highly donor-centric giving experiences to optimize giving potential from your supporters.

Start

On the home page, click Fundraising and select Text to Donate.

If you have existing Text to Donate forms created, you will see a table of them on this page. In this case, to create a new Text to Donate form, click the Create New button on the right.

If this is your first Text to Donate form, then you will be taken to the form creation process, like the Create New button does.

Setup Your Keyword

  1. Name your form
    • This is just for your reference for easy viewing and organizing in the Text to Donate Forms list.
  2. Either type in a new Keyword, or select an existing one to reset and start from scratch.
    • For more information about reusing, moving or reassigning a keyword, click here.
  3. Select an existing Campaign or create a new one.
    • NOTE: Campaign is meant to organize real-time reporting. It is also used as the title and text for the link used when a donor shares about your organization to Facebook from the Thank You Page.
  4. Choose what Shortcode you would like to use: 41444 or 91999.
    • The shortcode of your keyword is the phone number that the donor will text your keyword to. We give you two options to choose from since all MobileCause customers share the same two shortcodes, keyword possibilities can be limited. This allows there to be two of the same keyword to exist, just on separate shortcodes.
  5. Link for 'next' button after donation is made is where you would include a link for a donor to be redirected to once they have completed a donation.
    • Great links to include here might be a quick thank you video or a link back to your website or Facebook page to learn more.
    • If you leave this blank, no Next button will show on the Thank You page.
  6. On the thank you page, you also have the ability to change your Custom Message for Thank You page.
    • You can let donors know how their gift will be used, give them a call to action to share to Facebook and or Twitter and click the Next button for more.
  7. Enable Email Notification on Donation is where you will choose to enable or disable the ability for your MobileCause users to receive email notifications when a donor completes a donation.
  8. You then need to select the users you wish to receive the emails in the Select one or more notification recipients table.

Setup your Online (Gift/Donation) Form

The Online Form is where all donors will be directed to when placing their donations. This is where you will select what information you collect and how the general donor experience will feel. As you edit the donation form, you will see a mobile preview of the changes you make to the right of the accordion dropdown.

Logo and Branding

Upload your organization's logo, the event's logo, etc. by clicking Upload New for the header of your donation form.

We recommend that your logo is 600 pixels wide by 200 pixels tall for best formatting.

You may choose to either show or hide the logo all together using the Show/Hide switch on the right.

If you wish to use the default brand logo that you set up in Settings > Shared Settings, click Use default settings.

Upload the image you wish to be displayed in the background of your donation form when viewed on desktop displays.

The Background Image will not be seen on the mobile version of the form; the form itself will fill the display on mobile devices.

We recommend that the image be 1920x1080px for best formatting.

You have three options to change the alignment of the background image:
  1. Center - Takes one image and stretches it to fit the size of the screen.
  2. Tile - Tiles the image multiple times both vertically and horizontally.
  3. Tile Horizontally - Tiles the image only horizontally.
With Form Alignment, you can also place the form so it won't cover the best part of your background image. You can set the form to display on the Left, Centered or on the Right.

You can change the color of the submit button at the bottom of your form. It can be entered either as a hexadecimal code or by clicking on the color square and picking the color of your choice using the wheel.

Like the Background Image, you can also select a Background Color of your donation form if you choose not to upload a background image. It can be entered either as a hexadecimal code or by clicking on the color square and picking the color of your choice using the wheel.

Consider selecting a complementary Background Color for your form even if you have a Background Image. If a donor is on a slow network connection the Background Color might appear before the Background Image finishes loading.

Confirm before submitting - If enabled, when a donor clicks the Submit button at the bottom of the form, a popup will come up asking them to confirm their donation amount.

Enable Re-Captcha - If enabled, the donor will need to click the "I'm not a robot" on the form before hitting Submit for their donation.

Configure Email Receipt - Edit the email message sent to your donors by clicking the Configure Email Receipt button.  For more information on the message, click here.

Suggested Amounts

Show/Hide Switch
: Show or hide the suggested Donation Amounts using the Show/Hide switch on the right. If you hide the buttons, the donor will only have the box to enter the amount of their donation. It will always show the Default Donation Amount, set below.

Section Heading - This is where you can change the wording of the section header that is displayed above the corresponding section on your donation form. You can also leave it blank if you don't want the line to show.

Suggested Donation Amounts - You can customize the three suggested donation button amounts to whatever you think is best for your campaign. Keep in mind that you can arrange these values in any order you would like, so try listing larger donation amounts first and see how it effects average pledge amounts.

Default Donation Amount - This is the donation amount that will be pre-filled in the donation amount field when a donor loads the form. If the Default Donation Amount matches one of your Suggested Donation Amounts, that button will be selected, otherwise the Other button will be selected.

Add Custom Field - Most of the form sections allow you to add Custom Fields, such as videos, images, text entries, etc. For more information on adding Custom Fields, click here.

Recurring Donations

Section Heading - This is where you can change the wording of the section header that is displayed above the corresponding section on your donation form. You can also leave it blank if you don't want the line to show.

Recurring Donations - Use the Show/Hide switch to  show or hide the Recurring Donation module. This module will give donors the ability to set up recurring monthly, quarterly, or yearly donations. For more information about Recurring Donations, click here.

Add Custom Field - Most of the form sections allow you to add Custom Fields, such as videos, images, text entries, etc. For more information on adding Custom Fieldsclick here.

Contact Information

Section Heading
 - This is where you can change the wording of the section header that is displayed above the corresponding section on your donation form. You can also leave it blank if you don't want the line to show.

Contact Information Fields - Here you can independently configure personal information fields. You can:
  • Hide the field with the Show/Hide switch if you don't need to collect that information.
  • Make the field Required by clicking the checkbox.
  • Edit the name of the field by clicking the Edit (Pencil) button.
As a best practice, we recommend hiding as many fields as possible to shorten the donation process and increase completed pledges. There is also no need to record mobile number since our system does that automatically. MobileCause does not need any personal info to process donation payments other than credit/debit card alone.

NOTE: If some fields like email and phone number that have functionality built into them (ie. send an email/text receipt to the donor) and you remove or hide these, then a donor can potentially not receive their receipt or a confirmation of donation.

Card Information

Section Heading
 - This is where you can change the wording of the section header that is displayed above the corresponding section on your donation form. You can also leave it blank if you don't want the line to show.

Charge Processing Fee - You can choose to present your donors the option to pay for the credit card charge Processing Fee, when they donate by enabling the Enable/Disable switch.

Processing Fee Percentage - The Processing Fee Percentage defaults to 2.5%. Depending on your agreement for your MobileCause Merchant Services, you may wish to adjust this number. If you are using another Merchant Services Provider to process your donations, you can change the percentage to match their fee percentage.

CVV - MobileCause Merchant Services don't require CVV to complete a transaction, so we give you the ability to make it required or not, based on your campaign's needs. The Show/Hide switch here does not affect the form (it only makes it not required). So, you really only have the option to make CVV optional or required through the checkbox. If a CVV code is included, it will be checked against their bank information, if not, it will not check.

Most people are comfortable with entering their card's CVV as a fraud prevention step, so this defaults to required.

Footer Message

Show/Hide Switch
: Show or hide the Footer message using the switch on the right. By default, under the aim of keeping your form short, the footer is hidden by default, but...

Custom Message is a great place to add any text or organization info you may want to include from a mission statement to a terms of service.

Button Label

Section Heading
 - This is where you can change the wording of the section header that is displayed above the corresponding section on your donation form. You can also leave it blank if you don't want the line to show.

Button Text - This is where you change the text on the final submit donation button. You could change it to "Send Prayer" or "Give Hope", anything as long as it is 14 characters or less.

Embed Code

Your forms can be embedded on a webpage or linked to as a free-standing donation page using the code in the box of the Embed Code module.

For information on embedding the code into your webpage, click here.

For information on embedding the code into your Facebook page, click here.

Mobile Experience

To see what is the donor mobile experience for text to donate, click on Mobile Experience on the left side of the page. For more information, click here.

Set Fulfillment Messages

For those who have texted the Keyword but not actually completed their donation, they will receive up to three reminders to complete their gift. You can select which Fulfillment Messages you want for this keyword, by checking/unchecking each and clicking Save.

Set Up Your Fundraising Thermometer

Your organization can easily project this real-time thermometer during live events to build and maintain momentum during the giving portion of your event. Mobile pledges appear live on-screen as the thermometer rises towards your goal.

When you first click on Fundraising Thermometer in the lefthand menu, you will see your blank default thermometer like the one below. To design and customize your thermometer for the event, click here.

Viewing Your Live Fundraising Thermometer

The live version will open in a new window when you click View Fundraising Thermometer below the left menu inside the box titled Display Links. You can also access the Thermometers directly by going to Events > Thermometer.  You can enlarge the thermometer page to Full Screen to display or project at your event by clicking anywhere on the page.

Your Fundraising Thermometer During the Event

Once donors text your keyword, a space, the donation amount, another space and their name – their donation will appear on the live thermometer and they will get a text to complete their donation. The link in the text will automatically redirect them to the donation page. On the donation page, the amount pledged appears as the donation amount.

All participants that do not fulfill their pledge receive three reminder texts. These reminders dramatically increase pledge fulfillment.
